Madikwe Game Reserve
Although one of the lesser-known reserves, Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the largest in South Africa. Originally under farmland, it failed as such because of poor soil.
In 1991 a wildlife relocation project was initiated, involving the moving of entire breeding herds into this area. The reserve affords visitors the opportunity to view the “Big 5” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) in a malaria-free environment, as well as to sight the rare, endangered Wild Dog.
With its unique location – bordering Botswana in the north, the Kalahari Desert in the west and the Marico River in the south – it leads to a vast plain topography of open woodlands and grassland interspersed with granite outcrops and dotted mountains.
A mere 1-hour flight or 4-hour drive from Johannesburg, this area offers an excellent choice of luxury accommodation with exclusive access to the reserve.
Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge offers sheer luxury and is an excellent choice for honeymooners or couples looking for somewhere to unwind. Tuningi Safari Lodge offers the ultimate family bush experience, with a children’s programme which includes treasure hunts, “bumble drives” and bush tales while parents are out in search of the “Big 5”.
